Historic Cape Henry
First Landing
Take a step back into early American history at Cape Henry. Walk in the steps of the very first settlers who came to Jamestown in 1607. You will see the First Landing Cross, raised by Captain Newport in thanksgiving for a safe trip, which marks the very spot the colonist first set foot onto the shores of the New World. What an experience to stand in the very spot these early pioneers stood in as they went forth to start a New World.
Old Cape Lighthouse
Standing tall and guarding the entrance into the Chesapeake bay is the old Cape Henry Lighthouse, it stands near the First Landing Cross. This magnificent lighthouse was a major step for a new country. It lit the way for ships to trade and navigate the Chesapeake Bay. Designed by John McComb, Jr, it was contracted by Alexander Hamilton in March of 1791. The tower represents some of his finest work.
The Lighthouse has seen much history, from George Washington overseeing the applicants for lighthouse keeper to some destruction in the Civil War. The stories the stones could tell. You can share a part in this history when you visit.
